Our ambitious plans

Nature in the UK is broken. Facing interlinked nature, climate and health emergencies, we have never needed a healthy natural world more - and it in return has never needed us more. The good news is that it’s not too late to fix things. However, to make a difference to nature's decline, we must be ambitious.

By 2030, we want to see 30% of land and sea protected and well managed for nature.  To help achieve this ambitious goal, we want to increase the area of land we manage. By buying and restoring land that is nature-depleted we have an opportunity to make a huge difference for local wildlife.

The story so far

From our 210-acre Bickley Hall Farm HQ in Malpas, to the coastal home of the natterjack toads on Red Rocks Nature Reserve in Wirral, to Cheshire’s first beaver family in over 400 years in Hatchmere Nature Reserve near Delamere, Cheshire Wildlife Trust protects and manages 550 hectares of wildlife havens across the region.

In 2020 we launched our new strategy Wilder Cheshire which includes an aim to  expand the area of land under our management. We are working closely with our land agent, partners and supporters to identify sites where there is potential to create new habitat and connect other wildlife havens.

We are looking to expand the area of land under our management.

Recent land acquisition

  • In 2021, following a public appeal, we purchased Saltersford Farm Nature Reserve.  The former farmland has been given a new lease of life with the creation of wildflower meadows, ponds and woodland.
  • In 2022, we launched an appeal to buy another nature reserve. We had to overcome some obstacles and setbacks, with two site purchases falling through.
  • However, in January 2024 we were absolutely delighted to announce the purchase of our newest reserve: Greenbooth Nature Reserve.
  • Now that we've announced the purchase of the site, we will begin working to bring wildlife back to this wild space.

What next

We're continuing our search for land where there is potential to create new habitat and connect other wildlife havens.

It's difficult to find suitable land to buy at the right price in Cheshire. If you know of an area of land which might be appropriate, or know of anybody looking to sell or lease land in Cheshire, please do let us know.
