Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) with Cheshire Wildlife Trust

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a planning approach to new development that aims to leave nature in a measurably better state than it was found, resulting in a net gain for biodiversity.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust is working with developers and landowners to maximise benefits for nature, engage local communities in meaningful ways, and promote well-designed developments that enrich the places where people live and work.

'Gold standard' Biodiversity Net Gain

If done well, BNG offers a positive step forward in the way we think about development and nature in a more integrated way. Across The Wildlife Trusts we aim to deliver ‘gold standard’ BNG, creating genuine, long-term benefits for wildlife while supporting high-quality developments where communities can thrive, feel connected to nature, and enjoy healthier, happier live.

We do this by:

  • Going beyond the minimum 10% and striving to deliver additional gains on our habitat banks.

  • Strategically aligning our BNG sites to deliver measures in the Local Nature Recovery Strategy, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the broader vision of nature recovery.

  • Securing our habitat banks beyond the mandatory 30 years, making sure BNG is delivered in perpetuity, and additional to existing funding mechanisms, initiatives and commitments.
