Cheshire Wildlife Trust finds location for brand-new nature reserve.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust is delighted to announce that they have chosen a site for a brand-new nature reserve.

In April, they announced an appeal to buy and rewild nature-depleted land. A location has now been found. They’re unable to reveal its exact location due to the ongoing legal procedure to purchase the 135-acre plot of land, however they have revealed that it is in South Cheshire.

The site already has some fantastic habitats on site for nature. There are some established pools, woodland and a river. However, there is also a lot of work to do to bring wildlife back. There is a mixture of rough grassland and agricultural land and about two thirds of the site has previously been quarried for sand.

The site is also close to an existing nature reserve, so will play a vital role in connecting different wildlife havens, allowing animals and plants to move freely across the area.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust CEO Charlotte Harris recently visited the site and said: “I’ve seen kingfishers today as well as dragonflies, fish in the river and birds singing. However, there’s lots of land that’s not in a great state for nature. We urgently need your donations to help to raise £200,000 by 1st September to secure this site and bring wildlife back”.

By donating, supporters can help buy and rewild 3mx3m squares of land. These patches of land can be named and dedicated to someone or something special.

A patch of land could:

  • Create meadows to feed bees, butterflies and beetles

  • Plant trees to shelter species such as tawny owl

  • Build new habitats for wading birds

  • Link isolated areas so wildlife can move freely across the landscape

  • Provide people with access to nature

  • Store carbon and provide natural solutions to climate change

  • Make sure common species continue to thrive

  • Protect and manage more space for nature
