Compstall Nature Reserve

Various habitats including reed-bed, open water and woodland supporting a large number of bird species

The wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) notified as the best example of its type in the area. The ponds do not contain a great diversity of wildlife due to the shading and leaf debris that has accumulated in them. However water violet can be seen in several ponds along with marsh horsetail, marsh marigold and water forget-me-not. The ground flora includes pignut, bluebell, herb robert and lesser celandine. A wide variety of birds use the wood including tawny owl, treecreeper, lesser spotted woodpecker and water rail.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the remote and rural location of many of our sites, Sat Nav and postcode directions may not be accurate or in close proximity to the reserve entrance.
