THROUGH THE SEASONS IN CHESHIRE

Spring in Cheshire

From the gradual arrival of migrant birds to the unrolling of bluebell carpets - spring is a great unfolding story when everything seems possible.

Spring in Cheshire is a fabulous time to get out and about. With thousands of acres of woodland and great wetland sites, you're never far from a fantastic Trust reserve to experience spring wildlife at its best.

Breeding frogs & toads

Every spring, thousands of frogs and toads leave their over-wintering sites and begin the journey back to their birthplace to reproduce. Migration can occur at any time between January and April but frogs and toads generally emerge after a spell of damp, mild weather.

Spring butterflies

A sure sign that spring is on its way is the emergence of overwintering butterflies in search of early pollen.

The first butterflies of the year include the brimstone, peacock, small tortoiseshell, red admiral and comma. Also look out for non-overwintering butterflies such as the orange-tip.

Spring wildflowers

Spring signals the arrival of stunning carpets of beautiful bluebells and other wildflowers. Some of the best displays of these much-loved flowers can be found in woodlands managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Spring migrants

Many spring woodlands will be home to birds that have migrated thousands of miles to the UK to breed, like the cuckoo, blackcap, nightingale and chiffchaff.

In these challenging times our work will still continue to defend local wildlife
